After getting back from the senior high spring break trip to PCB, FL – I realized that while I had a great time, it wasn’t the most refreshing trip. Perhaps it was the 21 hour drive, or the limited sunny weather that wore on me. So in talking with one of my boyz in the van I got to thinking – just what does refresh me.
People. If you’re reading this, you are likely someone that refreshes me. Talking about life. Real life stuff. Not hokey-pokey biz.
God’s Word. Sadly only a portion of my daily devos are really renewing. Some days its a task to be completed. I hate that.
Working Out. No, this doesn’t make me pathetic. Weather running 16 miles on a Saturday or power lifting squats (squats…yeah right), it releases stress, fatigue, and is something I love to do with Kelly.
What about you – what brings refreshment to you? What renews your mind and soul?

My hearts pounding. I occasionally catch myself fidgeting as I look to the clock again…and again. Counting the hours until Panama City Beach, Florida. A vacation? I suppose in a way. Though with a group of 22 high schoolers, there won’t be a lot of “Jon & Kelly” time – and it’s also possible (though hopefully unlikely) that any of the students will make this week anything but heavenly bliss. Right now all I know is that it’s a getaway and the temperature is in the mid-70s.
Beach – check
Friends – check
Cornhole – check
Hours and hours of video gaming – check
You (reader) beginning to understand why I’m going nuts waiting for this trip. It’s gonna be bad to the bone.
I’ll be sure to update pics of me progressively getting more tan next week. For all you out there – have a great Holy Week. You’ve heard the story before, but imagine experiencing it again…for the first time. God’s love is indescribable.

Do these two words belong together? How would you explain what a servant leader looks like?
I broke this down into defining what a ‘servant’ is and what a ‘leader’ is. I think a servant is someone who looks for ways to undergo the act of denying oneself in order to bestow God’s love on that person. This can happen through speech, action, or even by omission. Was Christ’s servant nature based on what others were telling him to do? Most certainly this was not the case, but rather Jesus sought ways to bless others.
Leading is about influence (to quote John Maxwell). Influencing others comes from not only telling but living/doing. In fact influencing often comes by physical example. I tracked with Ken Blanchard in Lead Like Jesus when he defined a leader as “anyone seeking to influence the thinking, behavior, or development of people in the personal or professional lives.” While I have so much room for growth in this area, I have enjoyed some relationships where I was able to influence another person. It began with a relationship and involves intentional commitment to helping someone become more like Jesus Christ.
A different spin on the ideas of servant and leader was given by McManus – “Servanthood is about character, and leadership is about role.” What truth; that servanthood is more about the heart and leadership involves more of the practice. This idea helps explain why some people will never be great leaders – which the Bible doesn’t command of all Christians – yet all people can be servants, which is commanded over and over again in God’s Word.
This question particularly stumped me in my homework this evening: What’s the goal of a servant leader? [what do you think?]
